Happy Mother’s Day to All the Cannamoms!

Bloom would like to wish every mom out there a Happy Mother’s Day!

Being a mother can be one of the toughest, yet most fulfilling, jobs out there. That’s why we’re happy when we hear about moms who are able to successfully balance the never-ending job of being a parent, with the responsible consumption of cannabis to medicate or to simply enjoy some relaxation.

What is a Cannamom?

At the end of a long day taking care of the kids and other life responsibilities, it can feel nice to enjoy a special treat that helps you unwind. For some, a cup of herbal tea will do the trick. Some moms may choose something a little stronger like an alcoholic beverage.

The thing is, alcohol is not great for your health. In fact, in January of 2023, the World Health Organization published a statement saying, “when it comes to alcohol consumption, there is no safe amount that does not affect health.”

According to the World Health Organization’s website, “alcohol is a toxic, psychoactive, and dependence producing substance and has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer – this is the highest risk group, which also includes asbestos, radiation, and tobacco.”1

The Emergence of the Canna Mom

Understanding the risks of unwinding with alcohol, more moms are choosing to do so with cannabis. And that is what we call a Weed Mom, or Cannabis Mom.

A few years ago, parents may have felt ashamed to admit they enjoyed cannabis out of fear of judgment. But as we learn more about the potential medicinal benefits of cannabis and its legalization spreads across the country, there’s less of a stigma associated with parenting and cannabis use.

At the same time there’s been an increase in awareness of mental health issues and the potential for cannabis to help treat those issues. With that we have more parents turning to weed, and away from alcohol, to help alleviate some of the stress of daily life.

How Can Cannabis Help?

A study from February of 2020, examined the potential of cannabis to help treat mood disorders like anxiety and depression. Specifically, it examined the potential of the cannabinoids and terpenes found in cannabis to treat these mental health issues.

You see, when the natural compounds in cannabis are consumed together, instead of individually, it can provide enhanced cannabis experience known as the entourage effect.

Well, this study from 2020 found that when consumed together, the cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis could be beneficial for those dealing with things like stress and depression. The authors of the study also stated that cannabinoids and terpenes could be a viable alternative for those looking to avoid the undesirable effects of pharmaceutical antidepressants.

This is promising news for the millions of Americans dealing with mood disorders – which are the most prevalent mental health condition encountered in psychiatric practice. So, now that we understand why more parents are turning to cannabis, let’s talk about some gift ideas for moms who enjoy marijuana.

Gift Ideas for Moms Who Smoke Weed

When it comes to gifts for the canna mom in your life, there are many options available. But when it comes to helping moms destress, while remaining mentally alert, there’s a certain type of cannabis that could be ideal. We’re talking about cannabis sativa.

Although there’s some debate about the number of species of Cannabis, there are three species that are generally recognized:

  • Cannabis ruderalis –  low in THC and high in CBD
  • Cannabis sativas – tend to provide a stimulating and energizing effect that can reduce stress and anxiety, while boosting creativity and mental focus.
  • Cannabis indicas – typically described as having sedative, full-body effects that can help to alleviate pain and insomnia, while promoting relaxation.

The Effects Will Be Different for All

It is important to note that the effects commonly associated with indica and sativa strains will not be the same for everyone. Since everyone has different needs and their own unique endocannabinoid system, each person’s experience will be different.

Cannabis Sativa Benefits

Since sativa strains tend to generally provide an energizing and uplifting cerebral experience, they can be useful when you need to remain mentally sharp.  Sativa strains can also help boost creativity and increase mental focus.

Although most people tend to experience an uplifting high, some have found that certain sativa strains can increase their anxiety. This is why it is important to sample a strain before committing to using it as medicine.

Chocolate Edibles for the Weed Mom in Your Life

Cannabis or marijuana edibles are foods or drinks that contain cannabinoids. Although there are more than 80 different cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, the ones most people think about when it comes to edibles are those that contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD (cannabidiol), or a combination of both.

One popular choice when it comes to enhancing the potential effects are chocolate edibles. Not only are they a sweet treat, but due to the fat content in the milk used to make the chocolate, they can offer an enhanced experience. Here’s why.

Cannabinoids are lipophilic, meaning they dissolve in fats, oils, or lipids. Without fats, they won’t fully dissolve and you won’t be able to fully enjoy the benefits of your THC. So, one way to maximize the effects of your THC edibles, is to enjoy edibles that include fats, like nuts or chocolate.

A Word of Caution:

If you need to remain sharp and alert, chocolate edibles may not be best. Since the fat in chocolate can help to enhance the effects of your THC, these types of treats are best once the kids are safely tucked away in bed.

Also, make sure to be careful with dosage. Edibles can provide a more intense high than flower. They can also take longer to kick in – anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.  So, make sure to give yourself enough time to feel the effects of your edible before deciding you need to eat another one.

There are a wide range of cannabis drinks and cannabis beverages out there to suit all tastes. A major benefit of enjoying a THC drink instead of an alcoholic beverage include a reduction in harmful behaviors associated with excessive alcohol consumption.

Cannabis, on the other hand, could have potential therapeutic benefits which include helping to reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and alleviate pain. In other words, by replacing alcohol with cannabis it is possible to enjoy a refreshing beverage that could help you feel better – instead of hungover the next day.

Ultimately, however, the decision to substitute cannabis for alcohol should be made based on your individual circumstances. It’s recommended that you consult with your doctor before making any changes to your substance use habits.

Okay, now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s get into a few different types of THC infused drinks that allow you to drink your THC.

Enjoying a cannabis infused soda is a nice way for mom to add a chill vibe to her day while enjoying the relaxing benefits of cannabis. These fizzy drinks are made with real cannabis extracts, giving you a mellow and uplifting buzz without the unpleasant side effects of drinking alcohol.

Cannabis infused drinks come in all kinds of flavors, from classic cola to fruity blends. You can even get them in low or high doses to suit your vibe.

If you plan on enjoying a THC infused drink, make sure to pace yourself. Many weed drinks contain 10 mg of THC per serving. If you’re new to weed drinks, we recommend starting slow and giving yourself some time after finishing your first, before deciding if you should have another.

Remember you can always consume more, but if you overdo it, you could end up having to ride out some unpleasant side effects.

A Word of Caution:

Of course, when we talk about mom’s consuming cannabis, we want to emphasize responsible use. The topic of moms and cannabis is a complex one. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Cannabis use during pregnancy: It’s advised that pregnant women avoid using cannabis altogether.
  2. Cannabis use while breastfeeding: THC can be transferred to the infant through breast milk. It is advised that breastfeeding women avoid using cannabis.
  3. Legal considerations: The legal status of cannabis varies by state and country, and mothers who choose to use cannabis should be aware of the laws in their area.
  4. Moderation is Key: It’s important to use cannabis responsibly and to avoid overindulging.

Overall, the decision for a mother to consume cannabis is a personal one and should be made after careful consideration of the potential risks and benefits.
